"Richard Wherlock – a choreographer and his Company" A film by Simone Wiest His passion. As soon as he starts talking about dance, you can feel his enthusiasm and his ungovernable energy. Richard Wherlock, born in Bristol, travelled to Paris because of a woman he loved. Encouraged by her dancing, Richard took his first ballet class at the age of 18. Today he is the director of the Basel Ballet Company and a well known audience magnet. His name stands for choreography which is full of energy, fast and physically challenging. His work is very diverse and promises a high level of entertainment. What is the dialog between him and his dancers during the rehearsal of the new piece ‘Scent’? Do the dancers feel integrated in the process of developing the new choreography, or do they feel just like marionettes on strings? This documentary is about impact and effect during a rehearsal process. What guideline does Richard Wherlock have at the very beginning and how does he get inspired? How does he work on the next step? How does he combine the music together with the dancers to create something the audience can later watch on stage? How can he lead the dancers to transform his visions? Does it work? What is Richard’s goal? How does he reach it and what does it take to get there? |
